Child killed in southwest Fort Worth crash

The Fort Worth Police Department is investigating a fatality accident that occurred around 2:15pm Thursday afternoon at the South Loop 820 and Bryant Irvin interchange.

Authorities say a pickup truck was traveling westbound on the highway when the driver attempted to take the Bryant Irvin exit, but lost control and hit a bridge pillar. The impact caused “catastrophic damage” to the vehicle, according to police.

A 9-year-old boy in the back seat of the truck sustained serious injuries in the crash. MedStar EMS transported him to a local hospital in critical condition, but he was declared deceased at the hospital ER. He was from the Austin area.

Police say the child was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

This is still an open investigation as Fort Worth police work to learn more details about the crash.
