Six people shot after large shootout in Deep Ellum

The Dallas Police Department is investigating a homicide and aggravated assault incident that occurred overnight in the Deep Ellum area of Dallas.

At 12:42am this morning, Dallas police officers working in the area of Malcolm X. Blvd and Main Street heard several gunshots in the vicinity and went to check it out.

Shortly thereafter, the officers observed an armed 18-year-old man and ordered him to drop the weapon. He dropped the weapon and ran away, but officers were able to catch up and arrest him.

Additional responding officers located a crime scene in the area and found that a large number of armed people had engaged in a shootout, injuring several people.

A total of six people were shot: two men (18-year-old and 19-year-old) and four women (ages 30, 25, 21, and 15). The two men were transported to area hospitals where the 18-year-old was pronounced deceased. The 19-year-old is in critical condition. The four women were transported to area hospitals, but all sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Police are still working to determine if any shots fired by the arrested suspect were responsible for the incident. He has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon and Evading Arrest while the investigation takes place.
