So Now You Know! #4
So Now You Know! #4 – When you witness or come upon a vehicle accident, house fire, or other major incident, it is vital to pass along pertinent information to the 9-1-1 operator in the fastest way possible. When you dial 9-1-1 for an incident, remain calm. During emergency situations that may not even involve you, things can get stressful quick, so remain calm. Be sure you know how to locate addresses. If you are on the highway, look for a mile marker, exit # or exit street name to pass along to the 9-1-1 operator. Other key bits of info: for accidents – direction of travel (Northbound, SB, EB, WB), highway name (I30, I20, LBJ or 635, Loop 820), street name (always look for street signs), and any type of place or business nearby; for fires – street address (try to locate a number, ex: 1234) especially street name (once again, look for street signs). Most importantly, try your best to answer the 9-1-1 operator’s questions ie: is anyone hurt in the accident? trapped? Anyone inside the house that is on fire? Questions like that. Remember to remain calm and follow the dispatcher’s orders. So now you know what to do if you witness or come up on an emergency! A1
