One person shot dead by security officers after New Year’s party and disturbance in Dallas
The Dallas Police Department responded to their first murder in 2019 just hours after the New Year began.
Around 2:56am, Dallas Police were called to 8500 N. Stemmons Freeway regarding a shooting in the parking lot of a closed business. The parking lot was being used as overflow parking for a nightclub hosting a New Year’s Eve event.
The investigation found a disturbance had occurred in the parking lot. After the altercation, one of those involved attempted to leave the parking lot in a vehicle. Several unarmed and armed security officers, from the neighboring nightclub, intervened and attempted to stop the victim from leaving.
When the victim backed up and attempted to leave ignoring their commands, two security officers fired their weapons multiple times into the victim’s truck. The victim was shot multiple times and crashed into several parked vehicles in the parking lot. He died from his injuries.
The two security officers were detained and transported to the Dallas Police Headquarters for questioning. After being read their Miranda rights, they both waived those rights by agreeing to speak with detectives. They both admitted firing their weapon at the victim. During the course of the investigation, detectives were made aware of and reviewed a video circulating on social media that captured a significant portion of the incident.
Based on their interview, the social media video and witness testimony, both security officers were arrested and will be charged with murder.
