UPDATE: Pursuit leads to standoff, officer involved shooting in North Richland Hills; suspect and K-9 Officer injured

Around 8:00pm this evening, North Richland Hills PD was involved in a police pursuit that ended at Trinidad Drive and Caracas Drive. A standoff ensued and lasted approximately 45 minutes.

During the standoff, shots were fired. The suspect was shot and transported to JPS hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, a K-9 Officer was also struck by gunfire and transported to an emergency veterinarian.

Update – Details from NRHPD:

“On January 4, 2019 at approximately 7:15 pm North Richland Hills Officers were dispatched to assist Watauga Police Department regarding a suicidal adult male subject armed with a handgun. The call originated in Watauga from a family member. During the investigation a pursuit with the subject ensued, ending in North Richland Hills off Caracas Dr and Trinidad Dr. The subject failed to comply with officers commands and exited the vehicle. Just shortly before 9:00 pm, the subject confronted officers with his weapon, at which point multiple officers fired their weapons, striking the subject. During the incident a North Richland Hills Police K9 was struck.

The male subject was transported to JPS hospital by ground ambulance where he is receiving treatment, but his current condition is unknown. The Police K9 was also transported and is currently receiving treatment. The identity of the K9 will be released once an update is received from the K9 handler.

The suspect is out of surgery and stable. K-9 has surgery overnight as well.

Update – K9 Koba did well throughout the night and is now recovering, according to NRH PD.
