Man strapped with machete-style knife leads police on chase through Garland and Dallas
This afternoon just before 3:00pm, a Garland PD Officer observed a vehicle speeding in an active school zone near Garland High School at Garland Road and Ave B. The officer pulled the vehicle over and conducted a traffic stop. After briefly stopping in the middle of the road, getting out of his vehicle and yelling at the officer, the suspect took off and stopped again in a parking lot.
The officer made contact with the driver in the parking lot. While speaking with him, the driver claimed to be “God.” It was discovered that the subject had warrants for his arrest. Before the officer was able to take him into custody, he drove off and a pursuit began.
A low speed pursuit involving Garland PD, Dallas PD, and DPS-101 helicopter ensued. The pursuit was eventually discontinued, but the DPS helicopter continued following the driver from the air.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop at a convenience store located at Abrams Road and Northwest Highway. The DPS helicopter alerted agencies to the location, and he was taken into custody by Dallas PD.
Upon apprehension, it was found that the suspect, identified as a 47-year-old black male, had a large machete-style knife strapped to his side.
Garland PD took custody of the suspect and transported him to the Garland jail.
