Gun found in student’s backpack during first day of Mansfield ISD classes

The Mansfield Independent School District and ISD Police Department are investigating the discovery of a gun found in a student’s backpack today at Ben Barber Innovation Academy.

Officials say campus administrators discovered the weapon during an unrelated incident. The gun was found in the student’s backpack outside the classroom.

“Mansfield ISD Police quickly responded to the situation and confiscated the weapon,” said the principal in a statement to parents. “No one was physically harmed.”

The gun was located at Ben Barber Innovation Academy, but the student was also present at Legacy High School for morning classes, according to the school’s principal.

“The incident has been handled, and the student in possession of the weapon has been arrested and charged with a felony. Please be assured that providing a safe environment for our students and staff will always be our top priority. We take these types of situations very seriously.”

Mansfield ISD is encouraging parents to talk with their children about school policy on unauthorized objects.
