Shoplifting suspect who shot at Dallas police helicopter arrested after standoff

The Dallas Police Department has arrested a man following a standoff during the early morning hours.

At around 12:30am this morning, Dallas police responded to a possible robbery in the 5300 block of Bernal Drive.

A security officer approached the suspect, who was shoplifting, and he pointed a gun at the officer. The suspect then ran away on foot and Dallas police were called for backup.

Dallas police encountered the man near the scene, who reportedly pointed the gun at his own head. He then fired several shots at Dallas Police Department’s Air-1 helicopter, luckily missing it.

Officers were engaged in an active foot chase with the suspect and closed down lanes of Interstate 30 near Loop 12 in west Dallas. SWAT was called in to assist with the apprehension of the man.

At around 3:30am, the suspect surrendered to SWAT officers in the 2500 block of Sea Harbor Road.

The 43-year-old man is expected to be charged with Aggravated Robbery and Assault on Public Servant / Attempted Destruction of Aircraft.
