Off duty Dallas officer killed in collision with wrong-way driver

The Dallas Police Department has announced the death of one of their officers following a crash late last night on Spur 408.

Last night at around 11:48pm, Dallas Fire-Rescue and Dallas Police responded to a major accident on Spur 408 near Kiest Blvd. A preliminary investigation of the scene revealed an off-duty Dallas police officer was driving into work to start his shift when he was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver. The wrong-way driver was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Spur 408. Impact from the collision caused the officer’s vehicle to overturn multiple times, police say.

Dallas Fire Rescue transported the officer to Methodist Dallas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Despite life-saving measures, the officer was pronounced deceased this morning.

The wrong-way driver who caused the crash was also transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia has identified the officer as Jacob Arellano. He leaves behind a son, a girlfriend, and a grieving family.

Officer Arellano, 25, has been a member of the Dallas Police Department since June of 2019. He was assigned to Northwest Patrol Division, 1st watch. Funeral arrangements are pending. Officer Arellano is survived by his parents, girlfriend and infant child. Officer Arellano is also survived by his brother, also a Dallas Police Officer, police say.

This is an active investigation.
