12-year-old boy receives murder verdict in Johnson County shooting

Jurors in Johnson County Court at Law No. 1 deliberated nearly seven hours on Thursday before finding a 12-year-old boy delinquent, the equivalent of guilty, on a murder charge, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Police arrested the boy earlier this year in connection with a May 13 shooting death at a Sonic restaurant in Keene.

On a Saturday night back in May, multiple emergency responders from Keene FD and PD were called to the Sonic, 301 S. Old Betsy Road, for a shooting call.

Upon arrival, Keene officers located an adult male with a gunshot wound outside of the Sonic restaurant. Paramedics called for a CareFlite helicopter to airlift the victim to a Fort Worth hospital. He was later pronounced deceased from his injuries.

A confrontation between two adults became physical at which point the 12-year-old boy got out of the vehicle and fired multiple shots, striking the victim.

The 12-year old along with his adult Aunt & Uncle fled the scene, but were apprehended in Rio Vista.

The sentencing portion of the boy’s trial is scheduled for Thursday. County Court at Law No. 1 Judge John Neill will hear from witnesses and attorneys that day before determining the boy’s sentence.
