UPDATE: Two drivers killed in violent Decatur crash

At around 10:00am this morning, Decatur Fire Department, Wise County EMS, and Decatur PD responded to a major accident at the Best Western hotel on Highway 287 near Thompson Street.

Decatur PD says the driver of a pickup truck likely experienced a medical episode while driving, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway and strike a pole. His pickup then went airborne and collided with a second pickup truck, occupied by a 72-year-old Colorado man who had just checked out of his room.

Impact from the collision caused one of the vehicles to hit an awning pillar.

The 72-year-old man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver who had a medical emergency at the wheel was taken to a local hospital and pronounced deceased. He has been identified as a 65-year-old man from Chico.

Decatur police are investigating the accident.
