At approximately 2 p.m. today, July 10, Bedford Police received notification a stolen vehicle’s license plate was picked up by flock cameras. Officers located the vehicle and driver, who was in a local business.
Officers attempted to make contact with the subject, who immediately fled from the scene carrying a firearm.
The subject stopped in the 2200 block of Central Drive, where he conveyed suicidal thoughts to officers. For several hours, officers attempted to deescalate the situation and persuade the subject to put the firearm down. Unfortunately, negotiations were unsuccessful, and officers used non-lethal methods to subdue the subject.
During that process, the subject started trying to escape. Officers perceived the subject threatened them, and a Hurst member of the Northeast Tarrant County SWAT team shot the suspect.
The subject passed away on the way to the hospital.
This is an active investigation. The incident is being reviewed by the Bedford Police Criminal Investigations Division, in conjunction with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office. The Hurst Police officer has been placed on administrative leave.
