One fatality confirmed, many more residents injured in Wise County after tornado

The following is a release from Wise County Judge JD Clark:

Wise County emergency responders continue to manage a major severe‑weather incident impacting the Runaway Bay area this evening. The storm caused significant structural damage across multiple neighborhoods, resulting in at least 20 families displaced, numerous injuries, and one confirmed fatality.

Emergency crews from Wise County EMS, local fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and multiple mutual‑aid partners remain actively engaged in rescue, medical response, and damage assessment.

All county ambulances are committed to the incident, and additional EMS and fire resources from surrounding jurisdictions are en route or already operating in the area.

Access to several affected structures is severely limited due to roadway blockages, downed utilities, and debris. Responders are coordinating closely with utility providers to clear hazards and restore safe access for rescue operations.

The American Red Cross is inbound to support displaced families and assist with sheltering and recovery needs.

A Reunification Center has been established at:
513 Port O’ Call Drive, Runaway Bay
Families seeking information about loved ones or needing assistance are encouraged to report to this location.

For the safety of residents and first responders, the public is strongly urged to avoid the Runaway Bay area. Clear roadways are essential for emergency access and ongoing life‑safety operations.

Additional updates will be provided as conditions evolve and verified information becomes available.
