Plano man injured after dog’s paw pulls trigger of gun on his hip

The Plano Police Department is investigating the accidental shooting injury of a man earlier this week.

Officials say the man had his handgun tucked into his waistband when he bent down to pick up his dog. As he was picking up the pup, the dog’s paw accidentally pulled the trigger on his handgun, sending a bullet straight into the man’s thigh.

Luckily, the man was not seriously injured. The bullet managed to miss his artery and went through his leg.

“If you have a License to Carry, we ask for your safety and the safety of others, be responsible,” wrote the Plano Police Department in a Facebook post, urging gun safety.

  • When you are carrying your firearm, make sure you have a holster that is safe and protects the trigger from any inadvertent discharges.
  • When you are not carrying your firearm, store it in a gun safe or other locking device to keep them out of the hands of others.
  • Always assume the weapon is loaded and treat it as such.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until the weapon is ready to be fired.
  • Practice, practice, practice. Know your weapon, how and when to use it, and be a smart and responsible gun owner.
