The Flower Mound Police Department and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Division are continuing to search for the body of a 63-year-old man who went underway while helping another swimmer.
According to police, a group of several people rented a boat at Grapevine Lake. Some of the individuals decided to swim near the boat along the north shore of the lake (Twin Cove Park area). None were wearing life-jackets.
One of the swimmers began to drift away from the boat and panicked. The victim, a 63-year-old man, jumped into the water and swam out to bring the panicked swimmer closer to the boat. Both the victim and the panicked swimmer continued to drift farther from the boat, likely due to excessive high winds pushing the boat away.
Those on board the boat navigated it back in the direction of the two swimmers, but the man had already gone under. They were able to rescue the panicked swimmer and call 9-1-1.
Water rescue teams from Flower Mound FD, TPWD, and Grapevine FD all responded to the scene. They searched for most of the afternoon on Saturday, but were unsuccessful in finding the victim. As of 2:30pm Sunday, the search continues.
“We ask that everyone always wear a life jacket when on the water,” said the Flower Mound Fire Department.
