Man armed with metal rod fatally shot by Denton police at local pickleball facility
The Texas Rangers are investigating a shooting involving a Denton police officer on Sunday afternoon.
At 12:10 p.m., Denton Public Safety Communications received welfare concern 911 calls about an adult male who appeared intoxicated at a pickleball court in the 1100 block of Riney Road.
Arriving officers found the man on the north side of the pickleball courts where he climbed on top of a fence holding a metal rod. The man told the officers they were going to have to kill him and threatened the officers with the metal rod.
Officers attempted to verbally deescalate the situation. The man then climbed down from the fence and charged at officers with the metal rod in his hand. One officer deployed his Taser, which struck the man but was ineffective. A second officer fired multiple shots, striking the suspect several times.
Officers immediately rendered aid to the man. Medics transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will release his identity, pending family notification.
No officers nor other residents were injured during this incident.
In accordance with department policy, the officer who fired his firearm has been placed on administrative leave while Internal Affairs conducts an administrative investigation.
All inquiries regarding the criminal investigation should be directed to the Texas Rangers.
