KNOW BEFORE IT HAPPENS: What’s the difference between a severe weather WATCH and WARNING?

As the threat of severe weather increases throughout the day today, we want to make sure you are all informed on the severe weather alerts put out by the National Weather Service and disseminated through DFW Scanner, social media sources, TV meteorologists, and more.

One major and important tidbit information is knowing the difference between a severe weather WATCH from a severe weather WARNING.

A severe weather WATCH means conditions are favorable for thunderstorms with tornadoes, severe weather, flooding, etc. When a “Tornado Watch” or “Severe Thunderstorm Watch” is issued, the counties located within the watch issuance area have the highest probability of severe weather. It is important to note that if a severe weather WATCH is issued for your area, it is not a guarantee that you will see severe weather. A WATCH is usually a large geographical area, and predicting where and when severe weather will hit a certain area is a tough job.

*If a WATCH is issued for your area, remain vigilant and stay up-to-date on the weather.*

A severe weather WARNING means severe weather is imminent and will soon occur at your location or somewhere near your location. When a “Tornado Warning” or “Severe Thunderstorm Warning” is issued, the counties or areas located within the warning issuance area are under the threat of imminent severe weather. It is important to note that if a severe weather WARNING is issued for your area, it is a guarantee that a strong thunderstorm with severe weather, the probability of a tornado, or a confirmed tornado will soon impact your location. A WARNING is usually issued for a much smaller area where the threat of a major weather impact is likely and soon to occur.

*If a WARNING is issued for your area, seek shelter indoors immediately, away from windows, and follow your tornado or severe weather safety plan as impacts are imminent.*

We recommend you follow DFW Scanner across all platforms, along with Texas Storm Chasers, the NWS Fort Worth, and other reputable sources who are usually very timely in disseminating the information.
