Large fire at Fort Worth recycling plant sends smoke & flames into the air; widespread smell of fire

A large outside fire at a recycling plant in north Fort Worth sent billows of heavy dark smoke and visible flames into the air.

Engine 25, who stations right across the street from the facility, was first on scene of the fire at the recycling plant. The fire escalated to a 2 alarm response. Roads were closed in the area while fire hose supply line and emergency apparatus blocked the roadway.

The Fort Worth Office of Emergency notified residents in the immediate area and neighborhoods surrounding and just north of Meacham Airport to “shelter in place” while fire crews contained the fire. Winds from the storm shifted smoke to the southeast, and a “shelter in place” was subsequently added for that area as well.

Residents across a large portion of Tarrant County reported smelling smoke from the fire. The fumes were aided by strong wind gusts as a result of the storms.

There is no word on the cause of the fire, although frequent lightning from thunderstorms is the possible culprit.

Upwards of eight emergency apparatus and crews from Fort Worth Fire Department remained on scene overnight to suppress and further contain the fire.

There were no reported injuries.
