Denton officer stabbed, suspect armed with cleaver and frying pan shot dead after overnight disturbance
The Denton Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred during the overnight hours in the 200 block of Inman Street.
According to officials, Denton police were dispatched to a disturbance at the given location just before 3AM. 9-1-1 callers reported a male armed with a frying pan banging on doors and knocking down lights.
Officers arrived on the scene and immediately began searching for the individual. During the search, the suspect emerged from an apartment unit armed with a cleaver (large knife) and the frying pan. He advanced upon officers, leading one of them to discharge a taser. The taser did not subdue the suspect as he continued to advance towards the officers. According to one law enforcement official, the suspect was “quoting scripture” as he advanced on the officers. The suspect did not comply with commands to drop the weapons, ultimately leading to the officer to shoot him.
Police called for EMS and began providing medical attention to the suspect. It was during this time that an officer was found to have been stabbed by the suspect. It is unclear exactly when the officer was stabbed.
The suspect was transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased. The officer was transported to the hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
