Wrong way driver killed in six vehicle crash on I35E in Lewisville

The Lewisville Police Department is investigating a fatality accident that occurred early yesterday morning along the southbound lanes of Interstate 35E near FM 407 / Justin Road.

At 4:35am, Lewisville dispatch received 9-1-1 calls of a wrong way driver traveling north in the southbound lanes of the highway. Officers responded to the area and located a severe crash involving a total of six vehicles.

The wrong way driver was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver whose vehicle sustained the hardest impact from the head-on crash was seriously injured, but survived.

A heavy odor of alcohol was present from within the wrong way driver’s vehicle, Lewisville police say. Police identified him as a 40-year-old man from Mexico.

“Though intoxication has not yet been confirmed as a contributing factor in this event, impaired drivers remain one of the leading causes of death in wrong way driving crashes,” said Lewisville PD. During a recent TXDOT sponsored Impaired Driver Mobilization program, Lewisville officers arrested 52 drivers suspected of Driving While Intoxicated between June 25th – July 11th.  Lewisville PD is committed to continuing this level of enforcement to ensure the safety of our citizens travelling along our roads and highways.
