Mesquite K-9 dies in the line of duty while tracking down armed suspects
A Mesquite Police Department K-9 Officer, Kozmo, has died in the line of duty while tracking down multiple armed suspects from the end of a police chase.
Just after 2:30am, Mesquite police were assisting Balch Springs police in pursuit of a vehicle occupied by multiple armed robbery suspects. The pursuit ended in the area of Bruton Road and 635, when the suspects ran into a wooded area near the highway.
K-9 Kozmo was sent into the woods to help officers track down the suspects. The suspects were eventually located and taken into custody, but Kozmo did not return.
An extensive search for Kozmo ended around two hours later when he was found deceased. A necropsy and other testing is scheduled to determine the manner of death and more details will be released as they become available.
“It should be noted that our K9s are members of the MPD family. Kozmo was an amazing and loyal dog who gave his life in the performance of his duties. We ask everyone to keep all of our officers in their thoughts and prayers as we deal with this loss,” said Mesquite PD in a statement.
