Mother and child killed in Mesquite crash after exiting crashed vehicle on I-20

The Mesquite Police Department is investigating a fatality accident that occurred late Monday evening along the westbound lanes of Interstate 20 near FM 740 in far western Mesquite.

At 11:07 pm, multiple emergency responders were called to a multi-vehicle crash at the given location.

Police say two vehicles were involved in a collision on the highway, disabling one vehicle in the middle of the road. The driver of this vehicle and her 3-year-old son got out of the crashed vehicle and were attempting to walk off the road when another vehicle collided with them. An 18-wheeler was also involved in the secondary crash.

The driver, a 30-year-old woman from Benbrook, and her 3-year-old son, also of Benbrook, were pronounced deceased. No other drivers were seriously injured.

Authorities say the driver who hit them will not face any charges.

Lanes of the highway were closed down for most of the overnight hours while Mesquite PD’s traffic unit investigated the scene.
