Student arrested for possessing weapons near Richardson’s Berkner High School

The Richardson Police Department has arrested a juvenile student of Berkner High School and charged him with a state jail felony for possessing two weapons on campus.

At 10:55am, Richardson police received a 9-1-1 call of an armed individual in the area of 1500 E. Spring Valley Road. Witnesses reported seeing a male holding a rifle walking towards the high school. Numerous officers responded to the area.

Officers with Richardson PD and Richardson ISD PD were able to identify the male as a student of the school. They found him inside the school, but unarmed. A further investigation into the incident revealed two weapons, an AK-47 style pistol and AR-15 style replica rifle, inside his vehicle in the private lot of a nearby business. Officials have not said if the suspect intended to use them on the campus grounds.

The juvenile suspect was charged with Unlawful Carrying Weapons in a Weapon-Free Zone, a state jail felony. No further information is being released due to the suspect’s age.

“The Richardson Police Department would like to remind the public of the importance to report suspicious activity, as we recognize the vigilant awareness and actions of the person who initially called 9-1-1 to alert law enforcement,” said RPD in a statement.
