UPDATE: Juvenile suspect charged with felony in beating death of Mesquite PD K-9 Officer

The Mesquite Police Department has released additional information regarding the death of K-9 Kozmo, the police dog killed in the line of duty earlier this week.
It was determined that K-9 Kozmo’s death was caused by an assault; therefore, police have charged one of the suspects, a 16-year-old male, with Interference with a Police Service Animal (causing injury or death), a 2nd degree felony.
Mesquite PD and other agencies had just ended a police chase in the overnight hours of Monday when K-9 Kozmo was sent into a wooded area to track down the suspects. The suspects were later found and arrested, but K-9 Kozmo did not return. His body would later be found in the woods.
A police escort brought K-9 Kozmo’s body back to the Mesquite PD earlier today. A memorial service is still being planned.
“The Mesquite Police Department has been overwhelmed by the support of not only our community but also our law enforcement partners in this time of grief. Thank you to everyone involved today, your support means everything to us.”
