McKinney police arrest armed suicidal man after tent standoff

At approximately 8:18am this morning, McKinney Police Department officers were dispatched to the area of Highway 380 and Woodlawn Road following reports of an armed, suicidal individual with outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Upon arrival, officers encountered the individual barricaded inside a tent. The situation escalated into a standoff lasting approximately three hours.

In response to threats made by the individual towards officers and to ensure the safety of the public, the McKinney SWAT Team was deployed alongside other departmental efforts to de-escalate the situation safely. These efforts included the utilization of loud hails, deployment of the McKinney Police Department Negotiations Team, and the involvement of the Community Services Unit, which specializes in mental health responses.

A DPS helicopter was also utilized during this standoff.

The standoff concluded when the individual set fire to the tent. Officers, prioritizing the individual’s safety and the safety of the surrounding community, acted swiftly to extinguish the fire and take the individual into custody without serious injury.
