Suspect shoots self, Rockwall officer after police respond to shooting
A Rockwall police officer was not seriously injured after he was shot in the chest during a struggle with a suspect.
At around 11:15PM last night (Friday), officers with the Rockwall Police Department were called to the scene of a shooting incident in the 400 block of Tubbs Road. They located one man suffering from a gunshot wound.
As additional officers searched for the suspect in the surrounding area, they located a man walking along the roadway matching the description.
Officers confronted the man and attempted to subdue him, but a struggle ensued. The suspect was able to grab a firearm and turn it on himself. One round was fired. It struck the suspect and also the officer in the chest. It is not yet known if the firearm was on the suspect or the officer’s firearm.
Luckily, the officer was wearing a ballistic vest that spared a potentially fatal injury.
First aid was administered on the suspect who shot himself. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased.
Investigators are still working to determine why the original shooting occurred between the two men.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
