Carrollton police officer killed in car crash while on duty

The Carrollton Police Department has announced a Line of Duty Death that occurred Tuesday evening along the westbound lanes of the President George Bush Turnpike near Josey Lane.
At around 10:00pm, Officer Steve Nothem was assisting another officer on a DWI arrest when his squad car was struck by a passing vehicle. Officer Nothem was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash, and sustained serious injuries. Carrollton Fire Rescue and other officers provided life-saving measures on the scene and en route to the hospital, but he was pronounced deceased at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. The driver who struck the squad car, identified by police as an 82-year-old man, was also killed in the crash.
Police officers from several North Texas agencies along with the Carrollton Police and Fire Rescue escorted Officer Nothem’s body to the Medical Examiner’s Office for a proper autopsy.
Officer Nothem leaves behind a wife and four children. He joined the Carrollton Police Department in March of 2020 after serving with the Grand Chute, WI Police Department. Prior to his law enforcement career, he served in the United States Marines.
This is the first Line of Duty Death for the Carrollton Police Department.
