Update: 4 killed in Wise County passenger van rollover; several others hurt

On August 28, 2024, at 7:56 a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers, Alvord Fire Department, and Wise County EMS responded to a single-vehicle crash on the northbound lanes of US-287 in Alvord.

Preliminary investigation indicated that a passenger van was traveling northbound when the driver veered off the left side of the roadway. The driver overcorrected, lost control, and rolled over. There were 14 passengers in the van (including the driver), and multiple passengers were ejected.

Three passengers were pronounced deceased at the scene (including the driver), three passengers were transported to different hospitals by air with critical injuries, seven passengers were transported by ambulance with non-critical injuries, and one passenger was transported by ambulance with a minor injury.

A fourth passenger has been pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Officials say only one passenger was wearing a seatbelt, and he was not seriously hurt.

DPS Troopers are working with the Medical Examiner’s Office, EMS, and hospitals to identify everyone involved. Their identities will be released once everyone has been identified and their next of kin has been notified.

This investigation is ongoing.
