Update: Suspect executed Dallas Officer Darron Burks in his squad car, says DPD Chief

Dallas Police Chief Garcia has released additional details on the officer involved shooting that claimed the life of Dallas Officer Darron Burks and injured two other officers.

“Our officers were targeted for nothing more than the uniform they wear,” said Chief Garcia while providing an update to the public.

Just after 10:00pm, the 30-year-old suspect Corey Cobb Bey arrived at the For Oak Cliff community center. A short time later, Officer Darron Burks also arrived at the location and parked his squad car near the building.

The suspect then approached Officer Darron Burks in his squad car and spoke to him briefly before pulling out a handgun and executing Officer Burks while he sat in his patrol vehicle.

A police dispatcher noticed an unusual transmission from Officer Burks radio, and sent additional officers to check on him. During this time, the suspect went back to his vehicle and retrieved a shotgun. An assisting officer arrived and immediately took fire from the suspect. The officer also returned fire, and was shot in the leg.

The third officer arrived and was also immediately shot at by the suspect. He fired multiple rounds from a shotgun, hitting the officer in the face. The officer is listed in critical, but stable condition.

The suspect then fled westbound on Ledbetter and northbound on I35E. The pursuit came to an end on northbound I35E when he exited the vehicle armed with a long gun. Several officers opened fire, killing him. No officers were injured.

Chief Garcia says the suspect has a history of recording police. He noted there was an “event” happening last night, leading officers to believe the attack was premeditated.

“We lost a brother, a hero.”
