The Dallas Police Department has formally requested assistance from state law enforcement agencies, subsequently approved by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, following a spike in violent crimes across the city.
The Texas Department of Public Safety will be sending numerous resources, including special agents and troopers, to assist with investigative operations, gang operations, and air support. Two helicopters and two patrol planes will also be readily available to the City of Dallas, if needed. DPS-101 is a local helicopter based in Mesquite, which assists Dallas Police Department from time to time. The Dallas Police Department also maintains an air division with a helicopter and flight officers that provides patrols and air support to ground officers on a daily basis.
Dallas Police say the DPS assistance will be investigative in nature. They will not be involved in field operations or enforcement.
“Recently, there has been an uptick in violence surrounding entertainers that cross multi-jurisdictional lines,” said the Dallas PD in a statement. Rapper Mo3 was shot and killed in what’s being called a targeted attack along Interstate 35E on Wednesday, November 11th. Following Mo3’s murder, a fellow rapper called Boosie Badazz was shot and injured after someone opened fire into his vehicle at the Big T Plaza, 4515 Village Fair Drive, on November 14th. Reports say Boosie was shot in the leg and suffered a non-life-threatening wound, although police say he is refusing to cooperate with their investigation into who shot him.
“The rise in violent crime in the city of Dallas is unacceptable, and the Texas Department of Public Safety will assist the Dallas Police Department in their efforts to protect the community and reduce this surge in crime,” said Governor Abbott.
According to the Dallas Police Department’s crime reports, homicide offenses are up 25% year-to-date compared to last year. 235 homicides have occurred this year.
