18-wheeler driver killed in Ellis County crash

At 10:39am, multiple emergency responders from Alma VFD, Ennis FD, Ellis County EMS, and TxDPS responded to the scene of a major accident on northbound I45 near FM 1183 in southern Ellis County.

The preliminary investigation determined the driver of an 18-wheeler failed to control his speed while changing lanes and rear-ended a second 18-wheeler. Impact from the collision caused the first 18-wheeler to overturn and catch fire.

The driver of the first 18-wheeler was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has been identified as a 56-year-old man from Houston. The other driver, a 51-year-old man from Conroe, was hurt, but not seriously.

DPS originally stated this was a double fatality crash; however, they now say only the one driver died.

Lanes of I45 were closed for several hours while crews cleared up the wreckage. The lanes have all been reopened.
