Suspect arrested after injuring two Mansfield officers, pursuit

On Friday, December 13, 2024, at approximately 1:19 a.m., two Mansfield Police Department (MPD) officers were injured during an encounter with a suspect in a local park. The incident occurred at McClendon Park West, located at 799 W. Broad St., Mansfield, Texas, which closes nightly at 9:00 p.m. MPD Officer Lemons was on routine patrol when she observed a black 2001 Nissan Altima parked in the lot after hours. The vehicle was found to be occupied by two individuals identified as 18-year-old Diego Battle (H/M, DOB 5/11/2006), who was driving, and 18-year-old Breana Suarez (H/F, DOB
5/7/2006), the front-seat passenger.

Officer Lemons approached the vehicle to investigate. While at the car door window, she detected the odor of marijuana and called for a backup Officer. MPD Officer Jamison arrived on the scene, and the officers instructed the occupants to exit the vehicle to conduct a search. Diego refused to exit. A brief struggle ensued as Officer Lemons opened the driver’s door to engage further. Diego then placed the vehicle in reverse, striking both officers.

Officer Lemons was caught by the open driver’s door and forced to the ground. Officer Jamison was also struck but managed to evade the vehicle before Diego switched gears and drove away. Breana exited the vehicle unharmed during the incident. Mansfield officers pursued Diego to an address later identified as his grandmother’s residence at 6910 Cockrell Hill Rd., Apt 1102, Dallas. Diego fled into the apartment. Officers contacted the residence via phone.

Following a brief call with Officer Willis, an MPD negotiator, Diego surrendered without further incident and was taken into custody. The vehicle involved was impounded. Officer Lemons was treated by medics at the scene and released. Officer Jamison did not sustain any serious injuries.

Breana Suarez was released at the scene. Diego Battle faces multiple charges, including two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer and Evading Arrest with a Vehicle.
