Woman killed, another badly hurt after crash on I-20 in Arlington
The Arlington Police Department is investigating a fatality accident that occurred late last night (Friday) along the eastbound Interstate 20 lanes between Green Oaks Blvd and Kelly Elliott Road.
Just after 10:30pm last night, the Arlington PD, FD, and EMS were all called to a serious crash on I-20 near Green Oaks. Multiple vehicles were found to have been involved in a collision, all sustaining major damage.
Officials say a wrecked pickup truck had become stalled in the fast lane of I-20. A second vehicle had stopped to check on the persons inside the pickup truck, who had exited the pickup and were standing on the small shoulder of Interstate 20 next to the left lane. A third vehicle, traveling at highway speeds, attempted to take evasive action in an effort to avoid the wrecked vehicle. The driver swerved onto the left hand shoulder, hitting the two women who were outside the pickup truck.
One of the women was pronounced deceased at the scene. She has been identified as a 43-year-old woman from Snyder, Texas. The second woman was transported to a local trauma center with severe injuries.
All lanes of eastbound Interstate 20 were closed throughout the night while police investigated the scene.
“The Traffic Unit reminds the motoring public to attempt to get vehicles completely out of the roadway, when possible, and to exit vehicles safely and stand as far away from the main lanes and shoulders as possible when stranded on a freeway. Officers recommend possibly standing on the opposite side of a barrier wall or guardrail if available while awaiting public safety responders.”
The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrians is cooperating with investigators.
