Electric oven to blame for 4-alarm apartment fire in northeast Dallas

At around 12:54am this morning, Dallas Fire-Rescue firefighters were called to a condominium on fire at 9819 Walnut Street. First arriving units found fire and smoke showing from the three-story building.

Due to a combination of structure fire and weather conditions, the fire escalated to four alarms, bringing approximately 100 firefighters to the scene. The fire was declared under control at around 2:30am.

Fire investigators have determined the fire was accidental in nature. They believe an apartment resident on the third floor was using his kitchen oven as a heating device. The oven caught items on fire in the kitchen. An orange glow awoke the resident of the condo to the fire. He was able to get out, but sustained burn injuries in the process. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, but later released.

There were no other injuries to residents or firefighters during the fire.

One killed, two injured in head-on crash along FM 2280 in Johnson County

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatality accident that occurred around 4:00pm on New Year’s Eve along Farm to Market Road 2280 in Johnson County.

DPS Troopers say two vehicles collided head-on along FM 2280 just south of FM 917 north of Keene. The driver of an SUV going south on FM 2280 crossed over into oncoming lanes and hit a northbound pickup truck. Both vehicles ended up in opposite sides of the ditch.

The driver of the pickup truck was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with major injuries. The 70-year-old man was pronounced deceased at the hospital. His passenger, a 67-year-old female relative, was transported to a local hospital with injuries. They were from Arlington.

The at-fault driver in the SUV was also transported to a local hospital with injuries. She has been identified as a 40-year-old woman from Cleburne.

Lanes of FM 2280 were closed while crews worked the accident scene.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.

Young girl not injured after random bullet hits window at her Arlington home

The Arlington Police Department is investigating a random gunfire incident that occurred overnight in a quiet north Arlington neighborhood.

Joyce Atayde was at her home in the area of Interstate 30 and NW Green Oaks Blvd around 1:00am when her young daughter reported hearing a loud boom in her bedroom. Joyce and her husband originally thought it was a tree branch falling on the roof, but when they went into their daughter’s bedroom, they found a bullet had impacted the window and lodged itself into the carpet.

Thankfully, their daughter was in bed at the time. The bullet landed where Joyce’s daughter sits and reads her books.

The Ataydes called 9-1-1 and reported the incident to Arlington police, but their officers were busy working several shooting calls, including two that were fatal. An officer came out earlier this morning to take evidence and write a report on the incident.

“My daughter doesn’t want to sleep in her bedroom anymore,” said Joyce. The incident has traumatized the family.

Arlington police told her the chances of catching the person responsible are slim to none.

Celebratory and random gunfire is a Class A Misdemeanor in the State of Texas. It is punishable by a fine of up to $4,000 and up to a year in jail. If caught, a charge of Deadly Conduct could cost you $10,000 and jail time. Remember: what does up must come down. Do not celebrate New Year’s Eve, July 4th, or any holiday with celebratory gunfire. It could cost the life of an innocent person.

Intoxicated driver causes crash that killed another driver in Dallas

The Dallas Police Department is investigating a fatality accident that occurred on New Year’s Eve at the intersection of Lawnview Avenue and Scyene Road.

At around 8:45pm, a sedan traveling westbound on Scyene Road and collided with a Toyota that was southbound on Lawnview Avenue. The sedan t-boned the Toyota, killing the driver of the Toyota.

The driver of the sedan was transported to a local hospital with injuries. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that he was under the influence at the time of the crash. He has subsequently been arrested for Driving While Intoxicated.

The driver of the Toyota has not yet been publicly identified.

[UPDATED] 4-year-old child shot and killed at Arlington apartment complex

The Arlington Police Department is investigating a shooting that took place 36 minutes into the New Year. It occurred at an apartment complex on the north side of town.

At 12:36am, Arlington police officers were called to The Residence at Arlington Apartments, located at 709 Washington Drive, for reports of a shooting. Officers located a blood trail and obvious crime scene, but could not locate any victims or suspects. A

A short time later, Grand Prairie Police Department notified the Arlington Police Department that a 4-year-old boy was brought into the Baylor Scott and White Emergency Hospital located along the Highway 360 service road in south Grand Prairie.

The 4-year-old boy had sustained a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the emergency hospital.

Investigators believe the child was the victim who was shot at the apartments in north Arlington. “Investigators are actively working this scene to determine exactly what happened and trying to ascertain if the shooting occurred outside of the apartment or inside the location,” said the Arlington PD in a statement.

Persons of interest have been detained at this time.

UPDATE

The Arlington Police Department has arrested the victim’s father, a 21-year-old man, in the shooting death of his non-paternal son, a 4-year-old boy.

According to an arrest affidavit, the suspect was watching rap videos in the living room with the child. The suspect had a handgun and was mimicking a video when it went off. He believed the gun was not loaded.

A gunshot hit the child, who was transported by private vehicle to an emergency hospital in south Grand Prairie. The child was later pronounced deceased.

The suspect has been charged with one count of Manslaughter.
