Motorcyclist killed in Arlington crash; suspected intoxicated driver arrested
The Arlington Police Department is investigating a suspected DWI crash that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.
On November 16, 2024, at approximately 1:07 a.m., officers responded to the 2700 block of N. Collins Street where a 2004 Chevy Silverado collided head-on with a motorcycle.
When officers arrived on scene, they found the motorcyclist, a 55-year-old man, lying unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Witnesses told investigators the Silverado was traveling northbound along N. Collins Street, weaving in and out of lanes trying to pass other drivers. As the driver swerved into the center turn lane, he struck the motorcycle which was traveling southbound on Collins and had moved into the center turn lane to make a turn.
Witnesses further reported seeing the driver of the Silverado exit the pickup following the wreck, grab multiple cans that were inside the vehicle and throw them into nearby grassy field, and then try to run from the scene. Some passersby ran after him, caught him, and held him until officers arrived.
The driver of the Silverado was identified as 27-year-old Thomas Kelly Jr. Based on witness statements, statements Mr. Kelly made, and their own observations, officers believed he was intoxicated. Mr. Kelly was uncooperative with investigators and refused to perform roadside sobriety tests. Officers recovered multiple beer cans in the area where witnesses saw Mr. Kelly throwing items following the crash.
He was arrested and booked into the Arlington City Jail on one count of Intoxication Manslaughter, one count of Collision Involving Death, and one count of Tampering.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for a blood sample. That sample will be sent to a lab for further analysis.
