Dallas firefighters respond to yet another fire at old Valley View Mall

On Friday, April 7th, at 11:10 p.m., Dallas Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to a structure fire at the site of the old Valley View Mall, located at 13121 Preston Road, in North Dallas.

The incident was originally reported by Dallas Police Officers in the area that noticed fire coming from the building. When firefighters arrived at the location, they reported out with heavy smoke and fire conditions inside the structure. While suppression efforts were immediately initiated, they were defensive from the onset and included the dispatching of additional engine companies, and the use of ground and aerial water streams, to access the interior flames as well as multiple spot fires on the roof. Efforts continued into the morning; and though the fire was declared extinguished at 1:56 a.m., overhaul companies monitored the location until 3:30 a.m. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported in association with this incident.

Dallas Police Officers detained multiple juveniles, seen leaving the location, in a nearby parking lot. However, according to interviews conducted by Fire Investigators, it was determined that they arrived after the fire had already began.

The cause of the fire is currently listed as undetermined, but DFR reserves the right to change or supplement this finding based on new or additional findings.

High schooler killed in Irving rollover crash; alcohol and drugs a factor

The Irving Police Department is investigating a rollover crash that claimed the life of a Jack E. Singley Academy student.

Officials say a vehicle was traveling northbound in the 3900 block of N. Story Rd. at a high rate of speed when the high school aged driver lost control of her vehicle for unknown reasons.

The vehicle struck the inside curb and went into a skid across all three lanes of traffic where it struck the outside curb. It continued onto the grass shoulder where it collided with a small tree, causing it to roll over at least one time. The vehicle came to rest halfway on the shoulder and halfway in the roadway.

The front seat passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of her injuries.

The driver and other occupants, also believed to be high schoolers, fled the scene on foot, but all were located short distances away.

Unconfirmed reports indicate the crash occurred during the student walk-out protest of gun violence.

Alcohol and drugs are a factor. Charges are pending.

Below is a statement released by school officials:

“Our thoughts are with the family of the Singley Academy student who passed away Wednesday, April 5 in a tragic car accident. This is a tragic loss for the entire Singley Academy and Irving ISD community.

Limited details will be made public as the district wishes to respect the privacy of the family. The death of a student, however, has a ripple effect on the school community. Therefore, additional counselors are available to provide support to students and staff affected by this loss.

Our school and the entire Irving ISD grieves the loss of this young life, and we extend heartfelt condolences to the family at this difficult time.”

Resident dies in old east Dallas house fire

At 3:19 a.m. Dallas Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to a 911 call for a structure fire at a home, located on the 3100 block of Bryan Street, just outside of Downtown Dallas.

The incident was originally reported by Dallas Police Officers, who smelled smoke as they were reporting off-duty. After notifying dispatch, they proceeded to investigate until locating the home from which the smoke was coming. At that point the incident was changed from a “Smoke in the Area” call to a “Structure Fire Working”. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they reported out with lots of smoke coming from a one-story residence, but it wasn’t too long before conditions evolved and second-in companies reported fire coming through the roof.

Due to the proximity of the neighboring homes, several of them were evacuated as a precaution. However, firefighters did an outstanding job containing the fire and isolating the damage, located mostly within the attic, to the structure of origin. There was one person inside the house when the fire began; and though rescue crews were able pull them out, they were pronounced dead at the scene.

All the surrounding neighbors were allowed back into their homes, there were no other injuries reported in association with this fire and an out taps was declared on the incident at 4:32 a.m.

The cause of this fire will be listed as undetermined, pending the final ruling from the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, on the victim’s cause of death.

A short time later, officers came upon a two vehicle crash involving the suspect at W. Ave B and Garland Avenue. Information indicates the suspect driver ran a red light and hit an innocent vehicle.

As a result of the crash, five people were transported to hospitals: three from the suspect vehicle and two from the innocent vehicle.

One of the passengers riding inside the suspect vehicle was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Police have identified the victim as a 16-year-old male.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, an 18-year-old man, has been charged with Murder. Additional charges are pending.
